Lenten Fundraiser: My family lives in a car. Can you help?
When Stacy called our St. Vincent de Paul (SVdP) Help Line, she was desperate. Although her husband worked full time and she received disability income, her family had lost their apartment because they could no longer afford the rent. She was now living in their car with her four young children and her husband. The registration on their car had expired and she was worried that it would be towed and they would lose the only “home” they had. Where would they sleep? Volunteers from SVdP responded to her plea for help. The car registration was paid and the family was provided a short term stay in a hotel along with meals while we contacted other agencies to look for shelter. We are pleased to report that the family was eventually placed in affordable housing.
Over 7300 of our brothers and sisters living in Santa Clara County are living in their cars, in shelters or on the streets.
Last year, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul of Santa Clara County responded to over 15,600 calls from families across our community requesting help with food, shelter, gas, and medical bills. Our Society assisted by providing over $878,800 in direct financial assistance along with food and clothing. However, many times, the demand for help exceeds our funding and sadly we must turn families away. Please help us continue our mission to serve the poor during this Lenten Season. We are pleased to report that a benefactor has agreed to match all donations received during Lent up to $10,000.
